Is it customary for dwarfs to enjoy sleeping in wood? I have some beds set up, yet the two like sleeping in barrels or in piles of wood. Also, nobody's died or gone nuts yet, and I have a pile of rhino lizard corpses outside, so I guess things aren't going too badly.

Dorfs are just lazy. And not really that bright. Also, make sure your butchery is well-ventilated, otherwise it, and your foodstores, will start putting off a nasty miasma that harms your dorfs.
