>>2392 Many people are going to and from places of business. You stare at a random one. She seems a little freaked out and speeds up a little before continuing shopping.
Hm. Must not be a trainer! You should try around gyms and hotels in cities.
>>2395 Vanilla City Academy of Technical Design is directly next to the place you're looking for… Vanilla City Gym. People come to and fro with great frequency at this hour.
>>2399 The inside looks like a factory floor. There are a number of workers configuring items here! To get to the other side you'll have to cross a conveyer belt!
>>2403 "YO! CHAMP IN THE MAKING! I guess you've come to take on Leader Will? Beware his Item-based techniques – they're his specialty! Don't forget, the gym members here like to use an item on the first turn, so factor that into your strategy! If you conquer the gym, your name will be added to the slabs – but don't underestimate them, for every name on the slab there were ten challengers!"
He indicates two huge slabs covered in hundreds of names.
Phlox City: Mostly psychic pokemon. Route 5: Mostly artificial pokemon. Route 12: Mostly pest pokemon. Route 9: Mostly starter pokemon. North Road: Mostly fire pokemon.
>>2420 "When you beat a gym, you get a certification on your trainer card to prove you beat it! Make sure you tell them you have none, or they might use the teams they use for a seven-cert team! Unless you are ready to take on level 50s, I advise you tell 'em!"
>>2422 You walk through town and spot a lot of psychic options. In that tree… a flock of Natu. Down that alleyway: a spoink! There, floating down the boulevard, a Solosis. In the eaves of a building, you spot a Woobat. Not far from here, a Mr. Mime and Jynx are carrying something off. On a stump in the park, you spot a Meditite.
>>2423 You nearly step on the conveyor belt when he calls out: "Hey! What are you doing? That's a huge safety hazard! Use the bridge!"
He points to a catwalk that leads over the conveyor belts.
>>2431 You stroll in and spook the Jynx and Mr. Mime! Woah… it looks like they're emulating a human family – and the child role is a Ralts! That's what they were carrying!
Go, Mismar!
Jynx L12 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓] Mr. Mime L12 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓] Ralts L12 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
>>2433 Wow! A steel move! A good one too! Forget Tail Whip. "Good job Clyde! You didn't even get hurt! Still, I want to put the others to the test as well, so hang back for a while okay?"
>>2442 >>2443 No need to roll, he's just ahead. You stroll up to him.
"I don't recognize your face from the academy, but you're so young. Could it be you've traveled to Vanilla City already from another? How many certifications do you have?"
"Proper use of items can make your Pokemon incredibly strong… that's why being a Trainer is more than just watching your Pokemon fight. It's up to you to manage them and make sure they're fighting at 100%."
>>2479 He gives you a big grin and strides over to shake your hand.
"It was a good battle! I can tell you have a lot of talent in you. Just remember not to get discourage – you still have your whole life ahead of you! Maybe you should meditate on item use before coming back here – audit a class at the academy!"
>>2483 "Close. Medicine and battle enhancers are both classed the same – battle items. The third type is Technical Machines. Using these you can create powerful teams – like a Snorlax with Hyper Beam – even at very low levels. There are no level restrictions on TMs."
"Yes… your partner's movepool will have a major effect on how well you can battle. If you're just relying on low-power moves like Tackle or Bubble, you'll never compete with someone with access to Return and Hydropump."
They're giving a lecture on the different kinds of battle items in here. Battle enhancement items, like X Attack, X Defense, Guard Spec, and Dire Hit, as well as restoration items, such as Potion or Full Restore.
>>2507 Hey, on the projector in here you recognize the item GYM LEADER WILL's Zigzagoon was holding! It's a Choice Band!
Hm… Choice Band increases the power of an attack by 50%, but makes it so you can use no other moves! It seems that Disabling that Pokemon would cause it to use Struggle, the hidden move that all Pokemon know and use only in times of desperation.
>>2508 You do some charity work involving febreezing the homeless. Pretty soon the feelings of gratitude attract a Ralts.
Ah!! Better catch it fast before it uses Teleport!
>>2517 Stores… sometimes Pokemon carry them in the wild, or you can find them like you did with Clyde's metal coat. There are also Pokemon that are good at finding things, or getting an Item Finder.
Focus Band: There is a 10% chance that when the holder is hit by an attack that would otherwise cause fainting, it can survive with 1 HP. Can also protect against multi-strike moves, recoil damage, self-inflicted confusion damage, and damage from Future Sight or Doom Desire.
There's the Quick Claw, too. 20% chance of priority to go first.
>>2529 "Unfortunately not, although those who enroll at the academy will undergo training in item design and will take home one of their three class projects. Typically, our students create one held-item, one TM, and one Pokeball. One such class just graduated."
Keep looking. Keep looking. A Ralts, male, in contradiction to the feminine Gardevoir. I feel a strange attachment to the idea of raising one into a Gallade.
>>2535 "… Okay, nevermind then. Thanks for the info, miss." Darn. Guess I should just get back to training… Find trainers somewhere, maybe at the hotel? Need to make some money…
>>2437 I think I will. "Pardon me, but you wouldn't have happened to have heard of someone named Bismarck living here, would you? Recently came back from Phlox."
>>2588 It is now fully midmorning and there are Growlithe playing about a nearby stream. There is also tall grass nearby.
>>2589 "Bismarck? I think I've heard of him. He's part of that league of explorers. They're a little… out there if you ask me! Always spinning stories about mythical monsters, but they make for entertaining tales."
>>2594 My team strengthens. But I still wont be able to beat Will. I think I should move on to the next town. Go south and check out the shrines instead.
>>2595 You check in at the gate before leaving the city.
The guard looks over your ID and gives you a nod. "Be careful out there. Down the South Road you'll be headed through a dense forest to Umberreach, which is not exactly known for its warm receptions. If I were you, I'd keep going east from there toward Fandango City along the Old Road. You'll even find some respite in the cozy little town of Mint, which is a much friendlier place."
>>2596 They're all together in a group… you'll have to single one out somehow or take on the horde.
>>2598 You don't even attract the horde, much less a single Growlithe.
>>2599 You head out south toward Umberreach and what strikes you first is how wild and untamed this landscape is. You've never encountered a road where it was impossible to progress without going through tall grass – but everything is tall grass here. Everything. Well, except those extremely thick trees that block out all light. It's actually darker than Factory Cave here, because that at least had some remnant lighting systems.
Use next Pokemon? You are exhausted. >Blink PAR [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░] >Solaire L17 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░] >Venom L10 [▓▓░░░░░░░░] >Willow L13 [░░░░░░░░░░] >Dusk L14 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
>>2612 Neat… you're pushing through the dark, tall grass when you stumble upon an Inkay. It doesn't seem to have noticed you, so you could slip on by if you want.
"Astounding! You beat me, and lasted so long against the poison. You've earned your antidote, as well as this: the Mist Badge! You have learned that with your Pokemon friends, you can pierce the veil of any obstacle, be it confusion and doubt or even loss of will. With the Mist Badge, Pokemon up to level 20 will obey you. In addition, I'd like to grant you TM36. TM36 contains Sludge Bomb: bury your foes below waves of poison!"
>>2634 Pangoro Daunting Pokemon Type: Fighting/Dark It charges ahead and bashes its opponents like a berserker, uncaring about any hits it might take. Its arms are mighty enough to snap a telephone pole. Status: Wild Apx Level: 38
>>2653 You head down to the Museum. Here there are depictions of ancient, long dead Pokemon. A sign nearby indicates that fossil research and revival goes on inside. If you were interested in that kind of thing, you could find more information there.
Still, this is a pretty large square. There are buildings all over the place.
Let's see… you're in Fandango City. From here, you can get a ship ride up north, head back down the forest road to Mint Town, or up north along the Market Road to Sapshire.
>>2657 You bedded down in Cyan City. Last you recall you were going to hunt for some water types to help with that shrine.
You also got a tip about a weird sandbar in the south.
>>2660 They did mention a lot of interesting water Pokemon not on the sandbar – and you'll probably want a fishing rod if you want to catch water types in general.
>>2661 This is a larger city, so there's a MART megachain in the Pokemon Center, or you could go give patronage to one of the small mom and pop shops around town. Which will it be?
>>2664 I'll figure him out eventually. Maybe it's because I haven't gone for a gym? It has been a while since he's been in a battle. Maybe he's bored? Anyway, explore the museum. What's on the first floor?
>>2664 Hm. Well, it's a port town, there's probably some for sale somewhere. I get Chopshop and Heinz in their balls, pick up Millie, and go look for a tackle shop or something.
>>2666 On the first floor there are depictions and skeletons of great ancient Pokemon. You see Omanyte, Kabuto, Lileep, Anorith, and more.
>>2668 You're right, I mixed you up with Gaius's city. There's only the local shop here.
You head into the local shop and he gives you a friendly wave.
>>2667 It doesn't take you long in a city like this. You wander into the first tackle shop you see, and the man at the counter gives you an outgoing greeting, "Evening!"
>>2676 Amaura and Tyrunt were only recently discovered… Kind of exciting thinking that there might be even more out there that haven't been found yet. "Alright, Lucas, I think that's enough history for today. Let's go see if we can't hunt down that League of Legend hunters." And I'll head back out of the museum.
>>2678 "Our Good Rods are only 1000P, and our Super Rods are 10000P."
>>2681 "Great Balls are 650P, and Ultraballs are 1200P. An Ultraball will double your chance of catching a Pokemon! I am also running a special on Quick Balls today because I just got in a shipment, and it is a very low price. Just 800P for each Quick Ball. Quick Balls will make it much easier to catch a Pokemon on the first turn– use it to catch a Pokemon you are afraid will escape, like an Abra."
>>2690 "It's much clearer than other roads out west like the Old Road or the Forest Road. If you want to, you can make the whole walk up to Sapshire without walking in tall grass. If you're hunting Pokemon, look in the trees and watch the skies: bug Pokemon don't just like to lurk in grass.
>>2692 "1000P each, I'm afraid. They are good balls, though."
>>2693 >>2691 These are a selection of signs you see:
Warm Kettle Cafe White Rice Diner Venture Company Cafe Junes Museum of Natural Science Protech Regional Headquarters Global Pokedex Datacenter Server Valley Central Station Yakisoba's Revenge
>>2696 I think I'll hit the Venture Company. That sounds adventurous. Call Cinder back into her ball, after giving her a few pets like the good bug she is, and then I'll walk in with Lucas at my side.
>>2710 Market road. How pleasant! The grass is nicely trimmed back, but not wiped away. All down the route there are paper lanterns and banners wishing good luck and safe travels. Alongside the road there are cherry blossom trees.
>>2711 "Pardon for the interruption, but would there happen to be someone named Bismarck in this building? I'm looking for him, and his fellow legendary pokemon seekers."
>>2724 "I'd like to meet the pokemon he let sing in the Phlox Concert Hall a few days ago. I was hoping he'd let me add it to my Pokedex since it wasn't in its database. And I wasn't able to get a good picture of it from the back of the concert hall."
>>2725 You press it with a hand and immediately the floor gives way under you. You're lost in the void, and the only thing supporting you is your hand gripping the plate!
Solrock and Lunatone float about here and they look at you angrily.
>>2727 Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective!
>>2734 I'll shrug and then nod. "Yep. Never heard anything like it before, and honestly I doubt I'll hear anything like it from now on. I just want a face to go with the sound." I'll raise an eyebrow. "Don't tell me you haven't wondered about the unknown, and found some weird excitement about facing it?"
Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective! Krabby used Bubble! It was super effective!
>>2732 You are having trouble looking back as you are struggling to maintain your grip and not fall to your death in the cold abyss of the dark void.
Your hands strain to maintain their grip on the cold metal pad and you wonder if this is how your life will end.
>>2731 Nincada Trainee Pokémon Type: Bug Status: Wild Apx Level: 20 It makes its nest at the roots of a mighty tree. Using its whiskerlike antennae, it probes its surroundings in the pitch-black darkness of soil. When it nears time for evolution, it moves toward the sun to fill itself with power.
**Special Note: When Nincada evolves at a power rating of 20, it will split into two Pokemon. If you have space in your party for both, they will both join you.
>>2737 Krabby used Bubble! Krabby used Bubble! Krabby used Bubble! Krabby used Bubble!
>>2740 "I've no intention to study her, actually. I just wanted to get a look at the pokemon who sang so incredibly in the Phlox concert hall. I was pretty far in the back, so I couldn't see anything, and I knew I'd regret not putting a face to that voice." I'll scratch the back of my head. "And, truth told… I was really just curious as to what kind of pokemon could sing like that. I've never heard anything like it. So I kinda strong-armed this coordinator, Kingsley, into getting me into Server Valley just so I could have the chance to find you two."
>>2742 With a grunt, you pull yourself up onto the plate… whew. All around, you are surrounded by darkness. As you return to the safety of the plate, the Solrock and Lunatone stop acknowledging you and go back to drifting aimlessly.
>>2743 Naming: Trainee Pokemon Nincada trains all of its life before evolution to become a deadly warrior in the form of Ninjask.
Nincada used Fury Swipes! Hit two times!
Nincada L19 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░]
Venom L11 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]
>>2744 He raises an eyebrow. "That sounds fairly selfish."
>>2745 I'll nod. "Yeah, it really does." I'll look Bismarck in the eye. "But you must have felt the same thing the first time you heard your pokemon and didn't know what it was. Enough so that you tracked it down and caught it."
>>2749 He directs you ahead – directly forward from the pad.
>>2747 "You young trainers don't understand. When I was your age, there WAS no Global Pokedex. Very few people even had a Pokedex, and they were regional. Everything was unknown. Adventures today… are really exercises in checking your pocket computer for strategies devised by those who came before."
>>2750 "I actually haven't used mine all that much." I'll think a minute. "For the most of it, I've been relying on what I know, and on what my partners can do." I'll idly rub Lucas on the head. "The only time I tried to scan anything was in the concert hall, and that didn't really pan out because I was way in the back." Folding my hands in front of me, I'll keep eye contact with Bismarck. "And there's plenty still unknown in the world. Isn't that what you and your friends are proving, every day? That there's still adventure? I mean, just a short while ago, people knew there were only so many types of pokemon. Just like people always knew Kabuto and Omanyte were the only fossilized pokemon. But I can't even imagine how many more are left undiscovered out there. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that I'll find them all, let alone catch most of them, but you can bet that if I run across something I don't know what is, I'll want to find out what it is." I'll scratch my nose. "Even if I have to go into cities that I don't technically qualify for entry to."
>>2764 "I'm going to make sure you leave here. You don't belong here, academy student."
SHRINE AIDE LYON wants to fight! SHRINE AIDE LYON sent out Spoink! Do it, Owlene!
Spoink L8 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
Owlene L12 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
>>2765 "I don't see how that would prove anything, but I am a man of pragmatism. If all you wanted was to see my partner, then I may as well show you and get you to leave. After all, it's not like you couldn't just go to a show. Meloetta, go!"
Before you appears a beautiful music-themed Pokemon the likes of which you've never seen.
"Meloetta helped me become the world champion of Pokemon Contests, but she is also a fierce fighter. Strictly speaking, Meloetta has no gender, as other mythic Pokemon, but we have agreed upon this pronoun."
>>2768 "I can see right into your mind! I know what drives you!"
Spoink evaded the attack, almost as if he knew it was coming with his psychic powers!
"Psychic!"
Spoink L8 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
Owlene L12 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░]
>>2769 There are great lines drawn in the sand here, and conal pits that seem precarious to fall into. Your intuition tells you that you do not want to fall.
>>2770 Lucas seems to be attempting to suppress a look of being impressed.
>>2771 "I call Meloetta the Melody Pokémon. No Pokemon can follow her in song or dance in a contest."
>>2772 Pff. Of course he is. It's not every day you meet a legend. I'll nod my head to Bismarck. "Thank you for letting me meet her. And I've never actually been much for contests, but I might have to start checking them out." To Meloetta. "It was a pleasure to meet you."
>>2777 After a moment of thought, I'll look at Bismarck again. "When I was asking around town about where I could find you, I was told that you had friends who also looked for legendary pokemon. Are they coordinators as well, or do I can I run into them while exploring Tianxa?"
Venom wants to learn Poison Powder! Blink wants to learn Bulldoze!
>>2781 "It's true, the Venture Company is just the name of the foundation which bankrolls the real organization… the Legend Hunters' League. However, you are unlikely to run into any of my compatriots in the wild: they are in extremely dangerous terrain that a trainer of your stature would not dare brave, far off the beaten path."
>>2783 He's not entirely wrong, but he isn't right. The power I desire is but a means to an end. Power as an end itself is empty. The gym, that certainly seemed to show that. As for what my end is…
>>2785 In the still of the night, nothing disturbs these conal pits.
>>2784 >>2786 "I see. Well… good luck to you then. You must know that almost everyone in the nation takes a Pokemon journey eventually, but few reach the level of masters."
>>2788 You zero in on Yiman and follow him closely, focusing on his every step. There's nothing to see in the void except those angry Solrock and Lunatone, anyway.
Then, without warning, something blasts past your face, nearly sending you toppling. You hear a magnificent cry, but by the time you turn your head to see it, it's gone.
>>2791 I'll smile. "Darn right we will." I'll turn back to face Bismarck and Meloetta. "And when we're ready, we'll be back to challenge you two. Maybe not to a contest, but you did say that Meloetta was strong."
>>2792 The man in black is here. He's wearing a turtleneck, slacks, and a berret, all black. He's smoking, but withdraws his cigarette long enough to greet you.
"For the first time in a very short period, a second with no respect for the old ways stumbles into my midst. How curious."
>>2798 "Well, Lucas, we've got a ways to go…" >>2799 "I was kinda hoping to get Phlox Gym out of the way first, and to do that I'm going to have to train up my Rattata so its bite attack will actually hurt the psychic types the gym has. And I should probably train a little extra, since the gym wholeheartedly believes in using pokemon's affection for pure mechanical gain. Going to Phlox shrine pointed out a lot of things that I was doing wrong… that I was making the relationship between me and my team too one-sided. I'm not going to make that mistake again."
"Anyways, I was planning on heading over there too, but seeing you be unsure has got me thinking about visiting one of the other towns and seeing if I can befriend a few more Pokemons."
>>2806 I'll nod. "You might want to head up near Cyan city to pick up a water type if you plan on hitting the shrine. And picking up a psychic type on North road can't hurt either. Of course, I won't be there to bail you out if you have trouble catching them." I'll smile at the last bit.
>>2805 "Whoa! This is a leaf stone. Solaire.. This means you could evolve all the way to.. Vileplume!" Grin and pull up a picture of it on the dex to show him. "Do you think you would want to look like that?"
>>2808 "Hey, I'm not that bad, everyone just had a head start on me. Thanks for the advice, but I've already got a Water-type, so I should probably get that Psychic one."
>>2803 "But that is true. I came here out of curiosity. Seeking to know the ideology of the shrines after I found that of the gym's wanting. And I seek to use what I gain here as knowledge for the future. Perhaps to better understand my pokemon, especially since seeing the empty way the gym did it made me curiouser about how you would see it. "
>>2809 Oddish gives you a trusting look as he climbs up on your shoulder – this is tricky without arms for balance, but since you're bent over, it's possible. You believe he trusts you will know what's best for him.
>>2810 "Well, it was mostly luck, to be honest. Anyway, I should probably be heading back north. You coming along, or did you have something you needed to take care of here, first?"
>>2813 "I wanted to see a real Smart Competition and see where the pro's are at, you know. Besides, if you need help getting back in, just use the beepski."
>>2811 "The Gym apes our bonding in hopes that it will reward them with extra damage output. They seek power… and I sense that same desire in you. You came here because you were unable to defeat the Gym, and now you need practice… But maybe you will learn something after all. Let's see!"
SHRINE KEEPER YVES wants to fight!
SHRINE KEEPER YVES sent out Solrock! You're in charge, Owlene!
>>2816 There's an ultra Smart competition going on at the contest hall.
>>2818 The route is clear of trainers and tall grass. You can make it the rest of the way without encounters if you so choose, or investigate the grass and trees again.
>>2819 Back onto the Trash Route it is. Roll to traverse or search for Pokes.
>>2824 There are free balcony seats, or you could pay for a ground floor ticket. 150P.
>>2823 It's late at night and no one feels like battling at this time.
You hike up to Sapshire. This pleasant town is full of wooden buildings – many of them well coated in a thick layer of webbing. Pokemon move freely about the town, especially now that it is nighttime. Something that you note in particular is why the town got its name: all of the trees are bleeding sap en masse as the Pokemon drink the sweet nectar freely.
SHIRNE KEEPER YVES is about to send in Lunatone. Will Arthur change Pokemon?
>>2833 After the voting is concluded, the Pokemon begin a trivia competition: they have buttons for answer choices before them, and they must press the correct answer before all the others.
What is the capital of T–
Lombre buzzes in with Gray City! Correct!
This process continues for a time, going back and forth.
>>2838 The modern PC system was founded 27 years ago by then-Champion Balder. It guarantees every trainer, certified or not, access to Pokemon storage. For an additional cost, you can get access to more boxes. Under section 6 of the Pokemon Box Reform Act, Tianxia offers an alternative to box storage for trainers willing to pay an additional monthly fee to cover upkeep costs. Trainers that upgrade to this Luxury account will have their Pokemon stored outside the confines of a virtual box and instead on a free-range farm on Route 4, where the stored Pokemon can freely run and play without being cooped up in a box.
>>2839 Castform used Sunny Day! The clouds clear away, and it changes form!
>>2840 After that contest, they move onto the appeals section. The Pokemon start using moves that display their intelligence, like Calm Mind – or disable opponents from performing well, like Thunderwave.
>>2842 huh.. I'll have to find this place.. Route 4.. For now, go to withdraw/deposit and deposit Dusk. "Just for a little while Dusk." I will whisper to him as I do so.
"I doubt you learned anything out of this exercise, but nonetheless, you are entitled to the Heart Badge. Your calculating modernist mind… so obsessed with using your setups and super effective techniques to speed up the battle – you forgot the battle was the experience you were supposed to savor with your friend and allies to grow closer together. Oh well, I tried."
Still this seems like a good lesson. There are numerous parts of a Smart Contests, and i have to train my Pokemon in all of them. But with my group, it isn't enough. I'll need to add a few more to my crew.
>>2852 Most of these buildings are very old and made of wood! Several of them have holes in them, and some of them have weird crystal material for windows instead of glass!
>>2848 "A battle is just that, a battle. I am sure there are many more ways to bond with one's pokemon. I came here because I wished to understand them more, not to engage in violence. Perhaps it may take more time and consideration until I figure anything more about this, but regardless, I thank you for your time."
You search the area and find a Smeargle! How you! It hasn't noticed you, though, so you can get the jump on it or come back later as long as you don't waste too much time.
>>2861 It's quite late at night, so there aren't a lot of trainers wandering about. There a lot of little shops here that sell things like honey and rope. There's a Pokeball shop down the avenue.
>>2871 "Thanks!" >>2872 I could have sworn I'd already thrown all four of them. But if you say I've got three, who am I to argue. Send out Lola. "Lola, use quick attack!" '1d10'
>>2882 "I'm Shauna, we sell regular old Pokeballs, Nest Balls - for catching low level Pokemon - Repeat Balls - for Pokemon you already have - and Net Balls - for Bug types."
>>2913 "Oh." Look around a moment. "Hey, if there isn't anyone coming in for a while, maybe you can take a break? I could show you my pokemon. It doesn't seem like anyone but us is actually awake now anyway."
>>2922 Smile and let out all five in turn. "This is.. Willow, Solaire, Blink, Rena, and Venom." See if any of them warm up to Shauna right away or if they act scared instead.
>>2934 "Yea, Venom is really alert, she notices all kinds of things. And Rena is really strong, the pokedex said she's a trainee type, which means she trained for her whole life to be strong!" Grin a bit. "Hey, I bet if your parents saw that you could handle a pokemon, they'd let you train one! What do you think? Would it work?"
>>2935 It used Razor Leaf! Wilbur fainted. Use next Poke?
>>2938 There he is in the back, in a showdown with another league challenger. They must have more certifications than you because he's using a Ferrothorn.
>>2939 She looks uncertain. "I'm not sure… but it would be fun either way!"
>>2940 "Alright! Bring a pokeball of your own, and we'll go look together once you get off work, we'll surely find a pokemon who will love you!" Grin widely at the idea. "I'm going to go scout the area for a good place to look, you like bug types right?"
>>2950 I can expect to face a.. Whatever the prevolved form is. Drat. I need Trish for his second, but she's also my best chance against the Ferroseed.
>>2953 You head up to the swamp road. You immediately get the feeling that there wouldn't be many trainers on this road if it was peak hours: it's nasty, and covering any amount of "ground" requires getting up to your waist in swamp water in places where the road just suddenly ceases to exist, only to pick up ten feet later.
>>2956 Well, let's have those four out. "Sorry for putting you four through that…" I'll smile and show them the pokeball with Castform. "But we got him! With Kingsley's help."
>>2965 The guard in the gatehouse doesn't stop you. He's pretty fat and just gives an interested look as you walk on by.
Even though it is night and therefore pitch black save for the few lanterns here, there are a lot of people out, many of them in loose coats and robes. The whole town feels pretty sketchy… a bad neighborhood. Across the street, some coated people whisper conspiratorially.
>>2968 "It'll just take some time, you'll see." And make sure to spend the time giving everyone else head pettings and ear scratches, and some clockwise head strokes for Lucas. And I should be down to two potions and three pokeballs, since I gave one pokeball to Kingsley and used one potion on Lola.
>>2976 "Back so soon? Ah, but I see you have several new additions. That will make all the difference for your first certification, where you need only outlast two Pokemon."
"Oh, dear, I can't let you do that. It's dark and there are treacherous people about. You really should stay in town for the night, where it's safe. I simply will have to hold onto your Pokemon to make sure you don't do anything rash…"
>>2981 "I haven't seen them yet, sorry." fiddle with my bag a moment. "Oh, we can register each other, and if I find one, I'll call you so we can meet up again?"
>>2996 "Okay, well, you go ahead and do that. I'm sure any of the the residents of Umberreach will be happy to let you borrow their phone. At least that way I'll know you're safe and have bunked down for the night in town."
>>2998 Of course there's something here! You see tons of Pokemon swimming around your line!
>>2999 "We can go to Market road, or Swamp Road, I saw a lot of Surskit at swamp road, and Burmy hanging off the trees in Market road. Which one do you think you want?"
>>3001 It was then you realized that water Pokemon must just not care for you.
You finally manage to bludgeon to the surface the most useless Magikarp. Do it, Millie!
Magikarp L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
Millie L13 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
>>3000 "How about we place a bet on them? You flip a coin and call it in the air: if you're right, you can leave with your Pokemon, if you're wrong, I keep them to make sure they're in a good home."
>>3002 "I want a Pokemon that looks tough like it can scare away anything dangerous."
>>3003 OUR MISSION To better understand what causes evolution, what role it plays in the lives of Pokemon, to seek out new evolutions and to study what impact evolution and typing changes have on our world and species of Pokemon.
>>3005 "Many? I don't think so. Swablu's evolution is pretty well understood at this point. There was a long time ago when type-changing was a matter of great significance, but now it's seemingly mundane, as more and more Pokemon are discovered that change type with evolution."
>>3006 "Alright then, prepare to defend yourself!"
NURSE ??? wants to fight!
NURSE ??? sent out Dragonite!
Dragonite L∞ [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
[Throw Rock] [Run]
>>3007 She follows you out. You search through some tall grass. You found a conclave of Paras. Fight them, or keep looking?
>>3008 It fainted! Millie gained experience. Keep fishing?
>>3011 You shake yourself out of your dazed stupor enough to realize that you are seeing… two worlds at once. In one… a terrible Dragonite is chasing you. In another… you… it hurts to look! Something… has tentacles on your face…?
Huh? Clyde hit it!, and it's fleeing! Your world snaps back into focus, and the reality where you're being chased fades – it's some kind of huge dark type, but it fled. It left behind a little cloud of aimlessly wandering Inkays.
>>3012 There's a half-finished nest in a nearby tree, and a big hole in the ground at the base of the tree. Investigate either?
>>3020 "I don't think so… Professor Orange is usually very busy with leading our research program. It's exceptionally rare for him to speak to guests. I could sign you up for a free tour of the facilities, though, and there's a chance you may see him."
>>3023 Right, so I'm back on the road north to train up Lola some. I'll have Espurr in front while I'm on route 5, just in case I run into a poison type.
>>3033 Hmmm… Clyde is pretty strong but… Ah fuck it, let's risk it. That was just an illusion earlier, so everything will be fine… r-right? Let's head in and look for the center.
>>3034 "The tour group is in the next room over. Go ahead in there and it still start shortly."
>>3035 You head into the city. The guard is indeed fat, but he looks more lazy than suspicious.
Inside the city it is a pleasant afternoon, and there are no weird groups of overcoat conspirators or robed figures whispering about you. It is quite dark from the trees, but nothing like the pitch dark of the illusion. The center is just up ahead.
>>3037 There are a bunch of kids and a few adults here. You speculate it might be a group visiting from one of the academies or something. In any case, a tour guide soon enters.
"HELLO! And welcome to the world of Pokemon! I'll by your guide, Tracey. Please, if you have any questions, hold them until the end of the tour. On that note, I just have a few procedural rules to go over before we start. Please throw away trash into trash cans, not on the floor. Please do not leave the designated tour path – we have live Pokemon on site and they can be spooked by strangers! At times it may appear you are looking through glass, but oftentimes this is a one-way mirror to prevent Pokemon from being startled by tour groups…"
She continues on with some really basic stuff for a time.
>>3043 Seedot and Nuzleaf dot this place all over. Packs of Tangela are here, too. All in all this Old Road is a welcome change compared to the thick, dark grass of the South Road.
>>3051 You call down the thunder, you reap the whirlwind! It's Pansage! Do it, Lyra!
>>3052 First, you tour some facilities that are focused on Trading Evolution. Two scientists seem to be repeatedly ordering Haunters from one side of the room to the other and taking notes.
>>3062 "Right, very astute. In the next room we study evolutionary stones brought all the way from a dig out in the desert even further west than Chromeburg…"
She leads you into the next room which is full of glimmering gemstones.
>>3066 You have to ask around town to find out where the local gym is. The best answer you can get is to check out by the old waterfall near the middle of the island, so you set out in that direction.
>>3069 "Yes. It isn't totally clear what has caused such a large deposit of evolutionary stones so far out in the desert. That's part of what researchers like Professor Orange are working to find out!"
>>3072 Pansage used Lick! Clyde was paralyzed – he may be unable to attack!
Pansage L18 [▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░]
Clyde PAR [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░]
>>3073 The next room is full of historical paraphernalia like old signs, ads, and wrappers from the Rare Candy Company. One such sign sports their classic symbol: ®.
"The Rare Candy Company produces 'candies' that give Pokemon nutrients necessary to grow quickly. These 'candies' have been invaluable in the research of Pokemon that evolve though as it is colloquially called, 'leveling up'."
>>3075 Other than Vivi, you see a Drowzee sitting in a cardboard box in a nearby alleyway.
>>3076 A great waterfall coming off the side of the cliff. You briefly wonder where the water is coming from up there… it's a mountain in the middle of an island.
>>3077 An alleyway? On the north road? Wonder what it's doing there. Let's head on over there. Maybe Vivi can talk to it? "Hey, are you waiting on someone?"
>>3081 You aren't on the north road. You bonked your head on the way to the north road, then started looking for psychic types inside Phlox City. There were Natu in the skies, perching on buildings and trees, and there is a Drowzee in an alleyway.
>>3093 Smile at Shauna. "So.. did you come up with a nickname? Oh, we should register each other, then you can tell me how it goes with durant and your parents later!"
>>3102 Not in here… you go through a few more rooms, and finally the tour comes to its last room.
"Unfortunately it looks like we didn't get to see Professor Orange out in the lab today, but here you can see his great achievement, which will make Tianxia the most important region in the world. The Pokemon Prof has been able to alter an Everstone to have special properties that actually reverse evolution! Professor Orange calls this a Return Stone. They are being used in studies here at the lab."
She points to a reddish-orange gem in a nearby glass case.
>>3096 You head up under the waterfall, and inside, you find what appears to be a shrine. Standing on a buoy nearby, there's a trainer. A bespectacled man is at the entrance near you.
>>3097 What did you think the 'wild' part of wild Pokemon meant?
>>3112 "Excellent question. As I understand it, it works like an evolutionary stone in that respects."
>>3113 "In order to get to the lower levels, you need to beat a trainer so they'll lower the water level. The Shrine Keeper stays in a dark cave full of water that drips from the ceiling with as much intensity as a storm!"
>>3118 "The Return Stones are not for sale. There are very few of them available, and they are all being used for research. Everstones are just one component that goes into the development process."
>>3119 This is a pleasant and relaxed town where the pace of life seems slow. The buildings are ancient and traditional, and made of wood - some with paper walls. Even the clothes people wear follow the traditional style of robes – though there are a few exceptions, wearing more modern clothes.
There are a lot of Bellsprout here, though they mostly seem owned by trainers. They are popular here.
>>3120 "I don't think so, champ in the making! As for why… I don't know!"
>>3121 "You might always need more trainers reporting on them! And lucky for you, I'm a fresh graduate off the Vanilla city Academy! Items run in my blood! There's much I could do!"
>>3124 There's no mart in this Pokemon Center, you notice.
Do do dododo.
>>3125 Looks like it – or more accurately, a shrine worker.
>>3126 She shrugs. "It would be up to Professor Orange to admit anyone to the program, but he would probably want to see a resume or some credentials."
Shake shake… Gotcha! Drowzee was caught! Give a nickname to caught Drowzee? '1d2' m/f
>>3129 Right, there's a few little shops near here. Couple of restaurants, but you eventually find a little place called Adventure Essentials.
Or… Adventu e Es ent als, anyway. Some of the letters are missing.
>>3130 "Er… okay, then. Well, you can leave your resume at the desk. In any case, unless there are any more questions, this concludes the tour. Have an excellent day!"
>>3131 You inquire after the manager and head to the back.
"Look, I'll be honest – the title 'Stylist' is being pretty generous. We just need someone who can cut hair without looking ridiculous. We're being overrun in the busy season. Can you cut evenly?"
>>3141 Millie swivels about the floor, shifting amongst the images as Marill fires off a series of bursts, blasting away each image in turn and making contact just as Millie unleashes her psychic attack!
In the cave, the blows echo alongside the rhythmic dripping of water.
Marill L8 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

>>3142 "It's getting pretty late… I'll have to go back to my job soon, but thank you for this. Will you be staying in Sapshire long?"
>>3149 Nod "Okay, call me and let me know if you do. I don't want you to be late for work either." Give her a cheerful smile. "And I should get a little exploring in, There are so many bug pokemon I haven't seen yet! I be some only come out at night!"
>>3154 >>3152 "There's a secret place you should check out.. on the Market Road, look for a path off the western side of the road. If you follow it into the forest, there's a place with a lot of Bug Pokemon. You can find even more if your Pokemon knows Rock Smash."
>>3158 I don't need to be afraid of the dark. Have Venom lead the way and get to the west side of the road and look for the forest trail '1d10'. "A little dark forest is no problem for you right Venom?" I encourage her as we walk.
>>3159 It's a large, floating piece of metal. It's probably propelled by science. The shrine guard gets off, and…
You get on, and the water level begins to lower… soon a door opens, and the buoy floats out onto a big, underground lake. On the other end, you see a faint light and the silhouette of a man.
>>3164 >>3163 Shelmet Snail Pokémon Type: Bug When attacked, it defends itself by closing the lid of its shell. It can spit a sticky, poisonous liquid.
>>3162 Your guide has departed. Hm… Well, you're slowly drifting, so there must be an undercurrent… You imagine there might be a way to make it move faster, though.
>>3169 This grave figure does not return the wave. He looks as old as the cave itself: solid white beard flowing all the way down to the floor.
"So you've arrived in this refuge."
His words are punctuated by your surroundings: they weren't kidding about the dripping: it's like you sailed into a rainstorm. It sure doesn't seem like much of a refuge.
>>3170 Shelmet used Struggle Bug! It wasn't very effective…
>>3182 In the sky? Thought they couldn't fly. Must be leaping from tree to tree. Let's keep on heading north, to Crimsonburough, and see what I run into in the tall grass. '1d10'
>>3190 Why do I feel it is somewhat prophetic? Anyway, I'll rub my poor head and… Actually, you know what? The best training comes from on the job. I'm going to head back to Phlox, and take the gym challenge.
>>3191 Shelmet used Struggle Bug! Special attack fell!

>>3192 You already feel more professional showing up at the gym. A bespectacled man stands near some slabs by the entrance, and there are a few trainers milling about here in the lobby.
>>3194 Well, I bet they're other graduates of the School, if they aren't challenging the leader. Unless they're waiting their turn. I'll head up to one. "So, waiting to challenge, or a part of it?"
>>3205 I'll frown at him. "So what? You can learn a lot from every battle. No matter where it is, or who it's with. Besides, the shrines might have something that even the Academy didn't."
>>3211 "It doesn't matter, because you assume that by not going to a shrine I'm just avoiding a battle, but in the time you waste finding them and working out how to get inside, I can battle ten trainers and maximize my experience."
>>3213 I'll shrug. "Doesn't seem like a waste of time to me. Plus, it gives me a reason to build my team so I can respond to just about any situation. Sounds to me like you're just doing the minimum amount of effort. Are you sure your pokemon agree with that approach?"
You snag an intact paper lantern and carry it instead of using the flashlight on your Pokedex.
You trudge down the road and eventually, you find the entrance to a big cave. This must be the place Shauna was talking about.
>>3216 "I already told you I'm fighting at least three times as many trainers as you. But let's prove this the old fashioned way. You think your entire team can beat one of my level 25s?"
>>3217 "Considering I started something like three days ago? No. But that doesn't mean I'm going to just back down, because I know my team would fight you with everything they've got. And who knows, I might get lucky."
"Astounding! You cut through! Even though an insurmountable hurricane stood before you, you managed to find refuge with your partners! It is with great pride that I award you the Cavern Badge, for understanding that with your partners at your side, you can weather any storm! I'd also like to give you TM55. TM55 contains Scald – it's a powerful Water move that can also burn!"
>>3224 "Yeah, thanks. I guess I overestimated my chances, but my team carried me through even if it cost me most of them." I'll recall Heinz and accept my rewards. "What's up with your Wooper anyway?"
>>3229 "In the ancient times before the modern invention of Technical Machines, trainers would teach their Pokemon new moves manually, by exercising an extreme connection with that Pokemon. Some were able to do this with even stranger Pokemon – they called these special trainers Move Tutors."
>>3231 Well okay. Go back and pick up the light. let out Solaire. "Alright.. I know this didn't go well last time, but.. try a sweet scent to lure one of those bugs here. If it gets too tough, we'll just run away, okay?" '1d10'
>>3275 "Mismar… it's right there. Victory in our grasp. If you wanted the chance to fight beforehand, I'm sorry I didn't give it to you before. But it's right here! SEIZE IT! WATER GUN!"
"Congratulations! For defeating these two Pokemon, you are entitled to the First Certification! Show me your Trainer Card, and I'll stamp it. I'd also like to give you this Confusing Concoction! When your Pokemon holds this, it will start the battle Confused, but it will make it like you faster. It works by dampening the senses to rapidly generate affection – a breakthrough in bonding science!"
>>3279 "I see! Thank you, thank you… though, could I ask you a question? Why DO you bond with Pokemon? For them to increase their strength in battle for you?"
>>3280 "Of course! There are many bonuses that a trainer who never spends time on bonding will never benefit from. A bonded Pokemon is significantly more powerful – you won't conquer the Elite Four without this knowledge!"
>>3281 You can't do both in one turn! You switch to Venom.
>>3283 "Is that all, though? Truth be told, I don't primarily wish to be a strong battler, though if I want to travel and maybe conquer the league to mark it off it will become necessary. There are many reasons to bond. Personally, I'm more interested in the ability to communicate with Pokemon you're close to. Or maybe Pokemon in bonding therapy, to help people and pokemon alike suffering from, say, stress. Do you not research other uses as well?
>>3285 "There are many organizations that study bonding. The people of this city bond with Pokemon as pets. The zealots in The Building With No Door use their tricks and sorceries to connect to their Pokemon. We study it for the only reason the League exists: to be the very best, like no one ever was. Don't lose sight of that goal, and you can achieve anything!"
>>3286 Hm… you don't see any obvious "shrines" in this city. Maybe you should ask around.
>>3287 "Then perhaps the definition of best might have to be changed. I cannot say I am comfortable with drugging my pokemon to bond with them, nor 'bonding' with them solely to make them fight better for me. Either way, thank you for your time, gym leader. Good day."
>>3300 Heracross's accuracy fell! He used Arm Thrust! Super Effective! Hit two times!

>>3303 Not at all: it is a significant establishment. It looks positively ancient, and even has the classic paper walls. There is a beautiful calligraphy sign outside:
>>3307 >>3310 Bronzor used Confusion! It was super effective! Purple fainted!
>>3309 Inside, there are a large number of students sitting in front of boxes filled with sand, drawing calligraphy in it. Also sitting at various boxes are Bellsprout and Bulbasaur, working on their own pieces.
>>3325 This route is well-kept. On the other side of the fence you see various traditional starters – even Eevee – playing out in the open. Guards patrol the route you walk.
>>3335 "Imagine, Mismar, in the future, when we've gained enough power to do what we like. I'd like to catch a lot of pokemon and breed them for other trainers. Study them while they grow. I imagine I could help the populations of these restricted pokemon."
Let's keep going.
"More importantly, I wonder if the thoughts of the gyms and the shrines could be somehow merged? They're both flawed. Incomplete."
>>3337 I take out the badge book…case…thing and show it to them. "Lookit that. Our first badge, but that was the toughest fight we had yet. If Heinz hadn't pulled us out of the fire there and the end, we might not have this now. But I'm still proud of all of you. Are you up to try for some more?"
>>3346 There are no wild Pokemon here. You see some Furfrou on leashes and the like, but it is quite unlike your home in Amber City or Phlox where wild Pokemon can be found in the streets.
>>3347 "You're a Ringer, aren't you? I can tell, just by looking."
>>3348 I smile at them. "Good to hear, you guys. We'll do much better next time." I rub Millia's head again. "I'll try not to ask so much of you next time too. I'm sorry."
>>3352 Inside the gym, there are a number of trainers and their Pokemon battling or getting ready to battle. Doing exercises, working out typings.
>>3353 He checks your scroll and shakes his head. "Totally wrong. Maybe you should get some perspective… connect with your Pokemon, make some new friends. Grass types understand art the most."
>>3357 "I can see it in the way you write. You hesitate, your brush slips, your strokes are uneven. It's all wrong – like I expected from a Ringer. Not to mention you just spat in my face for giving you advice. What I get for trying to be nice to a Ringer, I guess. I'm done with you."
He walks off.
>>3358 You are facing south. In front of you, the doors to the Pokemon Center. Outside the doors, you see the edge of town and the beach.
>>3368 Ferroseed Thorn Seed Pokémon Type: Grass/Steel Status: Wild Apx Lvl: 18 It absorbs the iron it finds in the rock while clinging to the ceiling. It shoots spikes when in danger.
>>3367 This is a large academy dedicated to general trainer studies, with an emphasis on composition. You can go inside.
>>3369 In the light of the afternoon, you see mostly fishermen on the beach.
>>3370 "I'm not totally sure – maybe the Pokemon Prof would know! I would guess it has something to do with adaptation… changing themselves to better survive in an environment."
They're giving a lecture on type weaknesses and resistances – and how they combine. They point to certain combinations, like Quagsire and Aegislash as being strong choices.
>>3380 Probably serving the state through the academy. You recall all those academy Pokemon you used in your training.
>>3382 Fishermen are hard at work catching Water types here. One gives you a friendly wave. Things are much more relaxed for you non-modern types, neither side feels obligated to fight just over locking eyes.
>>3383 Breeding… ah, flame body. That could help. But what has Flame body? Fletchinder, Slugma.. Litwick? I do need a ghost and fire type, and Litwick does both… And Fogmire's close to here.
It's settled then. I'm going to take a detour to Fogmire. Let's go to the East road.
>>3396 Ferroseed used Pin Missile! Hit four times!

It doesn't take long for you to stumble through a clump and spot a Murkrow perched on a nearby tree. According to legend, Murkrow hunt ghosts, so perhaps it is here for a meal.
>>3397 There are a pack of trainers before you hunting for Pokemon, you need only reach out and challenge some! Your options are
Youngster Youngster League Challenger Youngster Fairy Girl Neckbear
>>3415 What are Durian's moves? I think I'll try and find a trainer somewhere to put him to the test myself. Any that I can find roaming around outside of town?
Kala seems surprisingly sociable for a recently caught Pokemon. Something in general seems strange about him. He doesn't, however, perch on your head, and prefers a nearby coat rack.
K Town We got the loot Your share is buried on the old stead at Witch Hill Look for a stump And leave your stupid bird at home Some bad habits rubbed off from you maybe because it takes everything it gets its mitts on
>>3499 It's burning up, as you saw it before: burning braziers mark this shrine. A wall of fire gates the entrance, but it dies down for you to enter as you approach. There's a ladder down inside.
>>3503 It's hot down here… the exposed rock is red – perhaps a hardened clay layer? Large carved out totems have braziers in their mouths, which provide light. There are doors to the left and right.
>>3513 This room is extremely hot, and a rush of heated air hits you as you open the door. Slugma, Torkoal, and Heatmor wander here, and you see some shrine workers, wearing what appear to be special clothes.
Sweat is beading on your forehead. It's not comfortable here.
>>3521 Well, let's let everyone out. Time we talked. "Alright, so we just got our butts handed to us. I know you all fought your hardest, and we got a few hits in. But the fault lies with me. I just want to know whether you all are ready to keep going. To show we aren't doing this wrong."
>>3526 And I make sure to pay attention to all of them. By the end of this, I'm going to have to be friends with more than just these six. "I'm sorry for throwing you all at that challenger. I didn't expect his pokemon to be that fast."
>>3521 Well I can't beat that many on a straight runthrough. Especially not in these conditions. Still, it can't hurt to train a bit, can it? I'll try to get someone's attention.
>>3527 Lola seems defeated. Nimbus and Vivi appear indifferent. Cinder seems ambivalent. Lucas seems frustrated. Sleepy appears detached.

>>3531 "These Pokemon? They live here, in the mountain! These are wild Pokemon. In the deeper parts, Magmar can be found. There used to be a lot of Cyndaquil here back in the old days."
>>3534 "I guess we'll just rest for a little while, and then we'll go back up to the north road. Train a little more. And then come back to take out the gym. Okay?"
>>3536 Solaire used Sleep Powder! Heracross fell asleep!
Heracross is fast asleep…

The volcano has been officially 'dead' for many, many years, but it takes a volcano a long time to die. In the depths, the smoking heart of the mountain still thrums with power… but it will never erupt again."
>>3537 You get a variety of different reactions. Lucas seems impatient, though.
>>3538 "I know, Lucas. You've been waiting for this for a while. But we'll be doing it soon. I can't underestimate the gym leader, so I'm going to watch him take a challenger. See how he works, what strategies he uses. And then we'll crush him."
>>3543 Heracross woke up! Heracross used Aerial Ace! It was super effective!
Heracross L16 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]
Solaire L19 [▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░]
>>3544 "Not these particular Pokemon. Some Pokemon like Growlithe, Ponyta, and Vulpix prefer the warmth of the sun, while others prefer the warmth of the earth."
>>3545 Michael's battling him. The Gym Leader is using a Ferroseed, Frillish, Trapinch, and Jolteon.
>>3546 How's Mike doing? And I see our gym leader doesn't monotype his pokemon… Going to have to keep that in mind. Maybe Lola won't need as much training as I thought.
>>3556 Well, that's what Phlox is famous for, really. Makes sense. My bonds with my pokemon aren't really that great, though. I'm still fairly sure Lucas doesn't like me at all… "What do you think, Lucas? Think we could overcome the Phlox Gym leader's bonds with his team?"
>>3563 "Oh wow! I'll be right over then. I just had a really tough battle with a Heracross, you've got to see him! I'm at the center now, which way to your house?"
"Just as well… there are other things to do here besides battle. Toughen up to the warmth… explore and see new Pokemon… maybe you'll learn what it means to be fire type!"
Her room is a little small. There's only one bed, but there's a sleeping bag on the floor. No dresser or bookcase, just a closet. It's all a little cramped.
"Sorry it's so small… I hate this house." She laughs nervously.
>>3578 "Don't worry." Give her a pat on the back. "I'm a small person anyway, don't need a lot of room." "Oh, do you want to see Heracross now? Did your parents like Durant?"
>>3589 "I have no idea! I have only visited one shrine so far." Let Blue out. "This is the heracross I was telling you about on the phone, I called him Blue."
>>3593 Bug type, so… fire or flying. Unfortunately, my fire type is also a bug type, and that probably has wing attack, at least. "Lola, use Quick Attack!" '1d10'
Got 250P for winning. Lola reached level 13. Lola wants to learn Pursuit.
"I'm not actually a challenger, I'm a planted staff member to make sure you're ready for the gym. By the looks of things, your team is a little overleveled for your first gym."
>>3602 You could just ask at the desk like a normal person.
Instead you wander off with Heinz to find a place to get cleaned up?
In any case, there's a public hot springs nearby you could bathe in… although you have no swimwear.
>>3603 She shrugs. "I couldn't figure it out when I was practicing with Durant. Maybe some city trainer would know. Or your Pokedex?"
>>3604 Before you stands a mansion – or rather, a small collective of mansions. A large engraved mailbox reads: Bosworth Estates. Looks like someone was rich enough to build a bunch of mansions for their whole family. They look a little run-down now. The yard is covered in stumps and wild pumpkin patches that have grown unchecked.
>>3605 Forget Focus Energy, learn Pursuit. "Maybe, but I went up against another challenger, the one that's fighting right now. He only used his Sneasel, but he steamrolled me."
>>3608 "Well, he insulted how I was going about it. Basically told me I was doing it wrong, and wasting my time." I'll frown. "I thought I could prove him wrong."
>>3609 The staff member shrugs. "You can't win every battle. Do you think you would challenge the Champion of the Pokemon League if he said you wouldn't ever get all eight certifications? You know most people don't: it's enough to get three or four for most trainers. You have to be a real vagrant to keep wandering and never settle down for a whole eight certs. Have you ever seen the Opening Ceremony in Hero City?"
>>3611 I'll shake my head. "I've been in the institute for the last four years. But I do plan on getting all eight certifications, and going to as many of those shrines that are in towns along the way."
>>3613 "As long as I have my partners, I could go for the rest of my life. Besides, I've already gone to one shrine, and I don't like leaving things half-finished. Thanks for the advice, though. Now, I've got to get these guys healed up before fighting the gym leader."
>>3614 You decide you like your thick traveling musk and do not rent a room. It strikes you that you have been on the road for one month and one day today.
>>3621 They're popuated by locals. Looks like six or seven people. They're… coed. Looks like country folk aren't uptight about privacy laws. Then again, you consider that it's probably much less tempting to oggle out in the countryside, since unlike in the city where there are plenty of civilians, pretty much everyone out here has a Pokemon. You don't relish the idea of a Heatran staring you down for watching a local MILF a little too closely.
>>3632 There's a little "house" that you imagine is for changing. It's one room and looks to be around nine square feet – a respectable outhouse size, maybe. The walls are made of paper, and it has no light.
>>3647 It's warm, if a little dirty. You hope the hot kills the germs, but something tells you that it has to be boiling or something to do that.
Oh well: you needed this. You feel really good, so much so that you relax every muscle and stare at the sky, and you aren't even a little tempted to oggle that sweet rack protected by the Ninetails.
>>3622 "You can kind of tell by the way they look at you, and how they react to your voice." I attempt to explain while petting Blue. "You could try battling at the shrine if you want to test your bonds."
>>3648 She sure knows how to pick her mons. I gotta wonder what her story is. Anyway, I just alternate between watching Heinz and the stars for a while.
>>3654 Ralts woke up! Ralts used Dazzling Gleam! Ralts scored a critical hit for GYM LEADER TODD!
Sleepy fainted!
Ralts L15 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]
Sleepy L16 [░░░░░░░░░░]
>>3655 She frowns. "I think Durant is still getting to know me. That's okay though, I have a long time to get to know him, probably!"
Blue seems to like it when you rub behind his horn.
>>3656 The night goes on and most folks depart. Soon it's just you and Ninetails lady.
"I haven't seen you around before."
She strikes up smalltalk.
>>3657 The third opens with a little finagling. Rusty hinges. Hm… this mansion is mostly intact. You wonder why it hasn't been looted. You wonder if what you're doing constitutes illegal breaking and entering. Probably.
>>3658 "Yea, of course! It will come naturally I'm sure. Just do a lot of different things with him." Smile and give Blue a nice rub behind the horn. "I think I'll try letting my pokemon eat some of that sap from the trees tomorrow."
>>3663 She nods. "Yes, they seem to like it a lot. It's what attracts all the bugs here, I think."
>>3664 She gives a mysterious smile. "You could say that."
Even with the tails in the way, you struggle to keep eye contact, though you maintain it. Being a kid with raging hormones is tough! At least you are well protected by the darkness of night water.
>>3665 Kala is surveying shiny things in the room. You suspect Kala has a Covetous nature.
The furniture in here is arranged… very… VERY oddly. There are couches and chairs set up in this room in such a way that your path is blocked from going anywhere but to the stairs… there's a grandfather clock nearby that you can see: it reads 11:11. In fact, the only sound you hear at all is the faint ticking of the clock…
>>3673 "Want to do each other's hair?" I ask with a smile. Put away Blue and let out Venom "Venom you want to try on the Monitor Sash? I can try to tie it like a bow, I bet it would look cute on you, and then Solaire might even notice." give a small giggle toward her "Or maybe you like the new guy Blue?"
>>3681 Ralts used Psychic! It was a critical hit!! Cinder fainted!
Ralts L15 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]
Cinder L18 [░░░░░░░░░░]
"Are you now remembering that Psychic / Fairy is neutral to Bug, I wonder?"
>>3684 She chuckles. "I get it now… you're one of those Phlox kids… maybe I'll see you at my shrine later…"
It's dark, but your teenager eyes strain as she unabashedly rises from the water before you before picking up a robe and slipping it on. You're too stunned to react before she's gone, but she parts with a, "See you soon, kid."
>>3687 "I'm aware. I just don't have any steel or poison types. And psychic types are strong against poison, so Steel would be the only option. Don't have any of those yet." I'll think a moment. "Come on out, Lucas! Use Quick Attack!" '1d10'
>>3687 "I guess its because I'm from Mint town." Smile and pull Venom into my lap try to make the sash look stylish on her '1d10'. "Okay, its my turn next, show me what you can do shauna!" hold still and let her do my hair.
>>3692 >>3694 You stumble backwards over yourself and topple out the window! You grab for anything – and manage to grip Kala's leg.
Kala may not know fly, but his frenzied flapping is enough to slow your descent to the ground just enough to not break any bones – you ache all over, and above, you see a terrible miasma explode forth from the window of the room you where in.
>>3691 "Whoa, that looks great Shauna!" I smile at her. Okay try tying the sash around Venonat's body like a belt then, maybe I can make the end a big bow if it has a lot of extra? '1d10'
>>3703 Heinz swims about enthusiastically in the pool. You relax a while to let the blood flow to other parts of your body than the place it was focused on.
>>3706 No other data was recorded – and even that has vanished from the screen. In retrospect, since you didn't even have it pointed at anything, you were lucky you got any warning at all.
Kala seems a little annoyed at you for using him like a parachute.
>>3712 "Wow, that's a great picture! Look how cute we are!" Grin widely and show the picture to Shauna before laughing a bit at Venonat "Venom, that's not a smile at all you silly bug." I say affectionately to her.
All you've got is Lucus… Like the beginning, back when you started…
>>3718 You look in through the big window of another house. There's a Dusknoir staring back at you. It was waiting for you. It's pressed up against the glass. It's stomach opens like a terrible maw to consume you. Cracks spiderweb across the thin pane of window separating the two of you.
>>3719 Southward bound! On the tall redwoods, you see Larvesta.
"Congratulations! You've defeated me, young trainer, and earned your First Certification! You are on the road to success in the Pokemon League Challenge officially, starting today! Come here, and I'll stamp your trainer card. Also, I'd like to award you this: a Confusing Concoction! If you have a Pokemon hold this, it will start the battle confused, but its affection will grow faster. By dampening its senses, you can make any Pokemon love you – a breakthrough in bonding science."
Got 2000P for winning!
>>3723 Dusknoir Gripper Pokémon Status: Wild Apx Level: 42 The antenna on its head captures radio waves from the world of spirits that command it to take people there.
The glass begins to crack wildly – it will give any second.
>>3722 "It's getting pretty late… should we sleep? You wanted to challenge the gym, right? You better be well rested."
>>3724 "Oh, I guess so. I might be too excited to sleep." Smile and get tucked in anyway. "What are the other kids like here? Back in Mint town most everyone was a student of Corwin's, learning Calligraphy."
>>3724 "Thanks…" I'll look dubiously at the potion. >>3726 Noted. And with that, I'll probably leave the gym, head to the pokecenter, and get everyone healed up. …And sell the Confusing Concoction.
>>3728 "There aren't a lot of kids my age here… that's why I want to leave this town… Everyone else my age is traveling the world with their Pokemon."
>>3729 You traverse the road safely. However, on the way you see those weird purple lights from before. Are those Hex Maniacs back, summoning Litwick?
You could ignore it and safely arrive at Phlox.
>>3731 You run, and you refuse to look back. You hear a shattering of glass behind you, and you swear you feel… grave breath on your spine the entire way, but soon you're gasping for breath, keeled over but safe on the side of the East Road.
>>3732 Like I'm ever going to use it. Drugging your pokemon to make them like you is stupid! And wrong! Once I finish selling it, I'll see what they're offering trainers with 1 certification.
>>3737 "Hm.. I bet they will change their mind once they see how good of a trainer you can be." close my eyes and smile. "And then we could do double battles.. we'd be unbeatable! And we could both use our bug types and.. we'd call ourselves.." Open my eyes suddenly and do a fist pump "The unbeatable bug besties!"
>>3743 All these names might as well be in Japanese! You don't understand any of them from a technical standpoint, lacking formal training. Some are more expensive, though. They range from 50P to 500P EACH!
You're sure the guy working the counter isn't getting paid more than 750P an hour.
>>3746 Well, I'll order six of the 100P ones. We just beat our first gym, so we'll splurge a little. This will leave me with 2090P. After they're bought, I'll head outside and let everyone out.
>>3752 Time flies… Well, I'll give everyone a good petting, scratching, rubbing, and otherwise shower them with attention and praise. When I get to Lucas, I'll add that I knew that he would pull through. He's the partner I chose, after all.
>>3759 Great. Now, I probably smell like I've spent a month on the road. Head home, and see if mom will let me use the shower, or if she'll kick me back onto the street.
>>3760 There's a light on in the attic. Though the house is dark and shuttered, I can see a flickerin' flutter, And I know what it's about. There's a light on in the attic. I can see it from the outside, And I know you're on the inside. . . lookin' out.
>>3761 You carefully navigate her demonstrating that you have finally earned a certification. She seems to think this is worth a shower and lets you wash up.
Mooch.
>>3762 Awww… that sweet little Ember wasn't very effective.
>>3763 I'm not going to be back home for a fairly long time. Probably. Got to enjoy it while I can. I should probably wash the clothes I'll be taking with me as well.
>>3785 As you slowly pad up the stairs, the light flicks out. You bring yourself up to the top and wildly screen the room with your light, hoping to find a lamp or lightbulb… but there is none.
The attic ladder slowly closes with a whine behind you…
Suddenly, your Pokedex picks up a new reading!

What –?
No way – it explodes with power – Your Pokedex is attacking you!!
>>3797 You manage to make it most of the rest of the way, but you encounter a passing of a large group of shady folk in robes headed south to Phlox. They pass you by.
>>3798 Shuppet got a free attack as you switched to Mismar!
>>3803 Hmm. Not yet. She's actually a higher level than most of my team, so until everyone else is up to par, I'll let her sit there for a bit. Then, leading with Lola, I'll head back into the grass on the Northern Road, looking for psychic types to chew on. '1d10'
The cunning doll faints your Mismar, and uses the opening to pull out a steak-knife it took from the kitchen! It latches on to your leg and starts to climb you – stabbing you all the way! Roll to get it off, oh God please get it off!
>>3805 You don't find any special enemies, though you do trip over a piece of metal.
>>3806 A spoon? You think maybe a Kadabra, or that Alakazam from earlier dropped it? Might have some residual psychic stuff on it. Heck if I know. Let Vivi out. "What do you make of this, Vivi?"
>>3807 It whispers terrible secrets into your ear while it sinks the blade between your shoulderblade and clavicle. Secrets about the Bosworth family. You can't focus on them while you're screaming, though.
Roll to focus enough to throw another Pokeball – getting anyone out to stop this is better than letting it go on one more second!
>>3816 Well, let's put her back in her ball, then. Now, I believe I was looking for Psychics to fight, with Lola leading the party. '1d10' Rustle some grass.
>>3823 It used Bullet Seed! Hit 3 times! It was INCREDIBLY ineffective!

>>3824 Drifblim The Blimp Pokemon Type: Ghost / Flying Status: Wild Apx Level: 36 It carries away people and Pokémon when it flies off at dusk. No one knows where they go.
With a single blast of air, Kala is knocked against the wall, out cold.
>>3829 Your heart throbbing in your chest, you barely manage to pull the gates closed behind you as you escape to the east road.
You watch part of the pack of Drifloon take off into the sky, disappearing into the dark cloud cover of the night. Still others slink back into the house…
>>3840 They're just surface cuts. The blood was real, but you thought it was stabbing into your neck. Terror will do that for you. The MART will not upgrade your status until you get 2 certs. You can currently buy Pokeball, Potion, and Mail.
>>3842 Looks like.. well, still can't tell. Maybe it was just milking me for fear like ghosts do.
"Up for one more round? It's daytime, the ghosts shouldn't be so active. We're going to hunt for treasure outside, among the Phantumps. Easy enough for you to deal with, right, Kala? Not going to risk going in anymore."
>>3843 Kala caws at you. You almost get the feeling that it's saying, I warned you, dummy. It's quite curious how intelligent this Murkrow is – it must have been owned for a really long time.
"Curiosity has always gotten the better of me. I wonder.. what happened to your old owner, though? Did the recipient even get the letter you were holding?"
>>3849 "Good! Now, to help you guys along, you're all going to carry some berries into battle. In case you get hurt. Clyde? You're still carrying that… metal thingy right?"
What the Ferroseed draws cannot be called letters of any kind. However, he retracts his spines, and rolls in what you're surprised to see is a perfect circle. Absolute confidence, no shaking, no hesitation.
"Interesting… I'm always fascinated by the expression of Pokemon before they become familiar with language and symbolism. There's something primal about it. Wild. Natural beyond fathom. And this answer… even though it is clearly not a word, is a right answer."
>>3889 "Maybe you should ask your Pokemon instead of me. If you ever establish a bond. Meanwhile… the Shrine Keeper will see you, if you can defeat me."
>>3892 This place is totally unlike any city you've ever been to. It's… not a city. It's a tiny little marsh town. No newspapers… just a few locals wandering the streets. The houses are raised up on stilts, so they won't sink into the ponds of muck.
Unlike the paved streets you're familiar with, this dirt road isn't even totally free of potholes and has several bridges over little muddy streams.
"Uhm.. good day. Sir, Excuse me, but what could you tell me about this town? Anything you could tell me about the surroundings could be good too, like the Mansions on the East road."
>>3897 "In the back room… you can speak to the Shrine Keeper and maybe you'll glean his knowledge."
>>3898 "Old Bosworth Estates, eh? Lot of history up there in Bosworth Estates. Folks round these parts call it Witch Hill because of all the odd stuff that goes on around there. Ghost types like it… some are just pranksters like the ones on the Swamp Road… others are more dangerous. Here in Fogmire we respect the spirits… there's a shrine to them, to keep 'em happy… they don't bother folks out here. Ghost types… ya can make friends out of 'em, if ya try."
>>3899 "They do seem like they could be friendly."
Let out Gastly.
"Managed to get this one earlier, along with a Rotom. I just hope I can learn more about them for now… especially since a Dusknoir and Drifblim tried to spirit me away. The Drifblim somehow even knew my name."
Shiver a bit.
"Witch Hill, eh? What are the stories behind it? Anyone go missing lately?"
"Witch Hill is notorious for disappearances – that's why they locked up the gate to keep out stupid Ringers who have no respect for the local spirits. No offense, of course."
>>3900 You slide open the paper door and find the man known as Corwin drawing a beautiful piece of calligraphy in the sand, eyes clothes.
"Witch Hill is notorious for disappearances – that's why they locked up the gate to keep out stupid Ringers who have no respect for the local spirits. No offense, of course."
>>3904 He does. Without opening his eyes or ceasing his labor, he remarks, "Please close the door behind you. Did you know you can see a trainer's style in the art? Pokemon Training and Calligraphy – they use the same fundamental styles…"
>>3902 >>3903 "None taken. I went in because I was curious. That, and I wanted to see the ghost pokemon. Was hoping to find a Litwick. Say, what pokemon do you see around here, anyway?"
>>3906 "Down on the Swamp road… Misdreavous, Gastly, Duskull – off the cliff, near the sea, Frillish, and Drifloon, sometimes. I've heard of those Rotom before… be careful with it – I heard they're tough to contain. You have it with you?"
>>3907 He nods. "It's good that you're here… Chikorita feels something."
It's only now you notice the little figure next to him, vines wrapped around his legs.
Suddenly, he nods. "Our library is in danger. Please, walk with me. You may ask the questions you have come to have answered."
He opens his eyes and walks to the back door, sliding it open, and walking down a dirt path to a separate building.
>>3911 "PC box system. I'm hoping to rent out a space on a ranch so my other pokemon can have space other than being in a box, once I've got the money to do it for a long time. Till then, I'll rotate them out."
>>3912 "That is a question that cannot be satisfactorily answered here. Instead of giving you a poor answer, I will give you a scroll when we are finished here."
He points inside. The library is swarming with Caterpie devouring the ancient scrolls of calligraphy!
>>3913 "I see… so you're storing a ghost that manipulates electronics inside an electronic device. Do you suppose that's wise?"
>>3918 She nods. "Strangest thing… I called into Server Valley to report an issue… apparently the whole PC system across all of Tianxia failed only minutes ago. They have no idea what's causing it. Until it's fixed, I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do to help you switch Pokemon."
>>3922 "Well, you used the proper containment procedures, right? Like you had it sent to a ranch instead of the digital box, or used a special Pokeball, right?"
>>3933 "…It might sound odd to say this, but that meant a lot. I'd hate to imagine what would happen if things screwed up because of a mistake of mine."
>>3937 "Y-yes… I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. Are there any special conditions with other pokemon, too? I was thinking maybe a Porygon would be the same."
"I am quite grateful to you for helping defend this Grass Shrine. Even though you are from a very different culture and your home is far away, you didn't think twice to leap in and put yourself in harm's way to protect this shrine. For this understanding of unity, I award you the Scroll Badge! It is only together that we can truly express how this world unites us! I'd also like to give you this – TM101! TM101 contains Heal Pulse: teach it to a Pokemon to let it aid an ally in dire straits!"
Got 1860P for winning!
>>3939 She shakes her head. "Porygon was made in the digital world, but that makes it more acclimated for staying in a box – that's its natural habitat. If anything, they feel more at home there. Although, there are rumors that some have escaped to Route 5…"
>>3942 "Oh, there's also something you should know – the men at Server Valley recommend not putting extremely powerful Pokemon inside. It probably won't ever be an issue for you, but – well, they made the announcement after a rumor surfaced that a mythical Pokemon was caught and stored inside – and it wrecked the system, just like this! Well – maybe not in the same way, but the same effect."
>>3941 Corwin gives you a sage nod. "You understand what this school is here to teach. But I promised you a scroll… I will give you the same gift of words I gave my last student who left."
He takes you back to his drawing room and draws a brush and scroll, and quickly and beautifully creates two words:
Our Land
"This is my answer to your question! This world is ours to share, no matter how we feel about one another! It is up to you to decide how that motivates you!"
>>3945 "But don't they restrict entry in there? It's an inner ring city, isn't it? They told me I needed 4 stamps, or to pay heftily for a passport. I don't think I can afford one."
>>3946 "Good! I expect you to never forget on your journey!"
>>3947 "It's not that expensive, just 2000P. That's, what, three hours at minimum wage? Or for one of you trainers – just one gym, right? Although you're right: if you want to save money, Pokemon Trainers with four certifications get the special privilege of entry without registering for a passport."
>>3948 "Well… it is quite the emergency. I could probably challenge the shrine here and, if I win, use the winnings to get in. How's my Rotom going to be until I pick it up?
